Join us for our Photographic Evening at Marley Hill engine shed where our steam locomotives will be busy being prepared and fired up in readiness for running the following day. They’ll be posed around the yard and inside the shed, with our crews on hand so you can capture those atmospheric evening photographs! Light refreshments will be available.

Beamish May Day Celebrations
5th - 6th May
In the Edwardian period, May Day was second only to Christmas in popularity and each town or village all over the country would have its own range of traditions and customs.
Speak to the friendly costumed folk to find out more about the customs of May Day, including how a 1900s Pit Village would have prepared for May Day as sprigs are placed on the doors of the Francis Street cottages in a tradition called May birching.

The NCPF was formed in 1901 when a group of photographic societies, located in Durham and Northumberland, formed an organisation called The Federation of Photographic Societies of Northumberland and Durham.

Legends of Industry Gala returns to Tanfield Railway, the world’s oldest railway, from 21st to 23rd June 2024 with a fantastic array of historic steam and diesel locomotives, as we pay tribute to North East engineers and celebrate the huge contribution these locomotives made to industries and communities around the region.
